I am probably not your best source of info as I live in seattle and usually just creek when I go to BC. But some places to start would be:
The Rutherford Play Park. The Rutherford River where it crosses 99 (?) has a new play park, that would be a good place to meet people. I haven't heard how good the play is there, but it would be convient.
The Cal-Check. Where the Callahan crosses the same road, is the put-in to probably the most popular play run in the area. There is a little play hole at the put-in when the water is good (higher) and better play downriver.
The Ashlu Play Run. The Ashlu is the best and most classic river up there, and has a good play run on it.
Skookumchuck. Over on the Sunshine coast is Skook, which is world class. It is more advanced at full tide, but can be a great learning place when the tide is around 11. Search skookumchuck online.
The Thompson. In the fall, the Thompson has great play. The frog wave.
Hope this helps.
