Rockville, Md. (AP) - Remains found in Northwest Washington earlier this year have been positively identified as those of a kayaker from South Dakota who's been missing since October.

Montgomery County (website - news) police say 35-year-old Todd Andrew's skull was found on New Year's Day and other skeletal remains were found February third in near the C&O canal towpath. The D.C. medical examiner made the identification through dental records and X-rays. The medical examiner ruled that he accidentally drowned.

Andrew, who was from Spearfish, South Dakota, was last seen kayaking on the Potomac River on October 19th, but he did not show up to meet with other members of his party, as expected. His kayak and some clothing he was believed to be wearing were recovered later that day.

It's good they found his remains i suppose. thats a bit misleading saying he 'didnt show up to meet his party' it was more like his partner watched him swim over the last drop and disappear forever. whats done is done but i think we as the local experts have a responsibility to get the facts out, not just to the boating community but to the public at large. the media is as a rule - clueless, and if they dont find someone resourseful getting off the river at anglers, or call a reliable source-eroneous stories are going to continue to pop up. everytime theres a flood or a death the post for example always calls davey hearn since he is one of the most knowledgeable paddlers in the area. maybe some of us should do the same. the posts coverage was great but if anyone watched the tv news, you know what i'm talking about. this is a small error but the reputation of whitewater kayaking as a sport is on the line whenever we get media coverage. it should be correct and, preferably positive
