maryland does own the entire potomac, has since 1632. lord baltimore and some lady named mary and all that historical stuff.
I am sick of guide books listing the po under the state or virginia. appalachian whitewater does it. so does this website in some spots. its not all that big a deal, but come on. there are only a couple of legal acces points on the virginia side, and there are several oversized mansions littering the virginia side. and you can only put in above great falls and little falls from the maryland side. thats my rant for this week

The best strech of the pootomac isn't even near DC though its way out in the boonedocks of Kitzmiller MD 13miles of continous 3-4 a big water experience and you don't see a person its all play and slides huge waves and holes recommended levels for fun anything above 5ft and below 7ft above 7ft its supposed to have river wide holes that will not let go. I've definetly trust that i've seen this at 6ft and it was big another foot would be crazy.

The Kitzmiller section is nice, and way underpaddled. But I am going to have to vot Great Falls as the best the Potomac has to offer. Sure it can get crowded and there are occasional access issues but you can't beat water like that so close to home.

wildwater guy, I'll tell you a secret. I wrote the Great Falls description that was in Appalachian Whitewater, was repeated in Classic Virginia Rivers, and then on GORP. At the time, I was the only one involved with the book that had run GF (early 80s), and I was contracted to write the Virginia section of the book. Poof!!, Great Falls moves over one state and has more or less stayed there ever since, at least in the books.
But the whole 1639 thing was a dreadful mistake and we should really own it anyway.
